GFC gu11u12 Teams Finish Winter Season with Championships
Grasshopper FC continued the indoor successes of 2008 with championships in Futsal and 7v7 indoor league this winter.
Futsal is a integral part of the player development program at GFC during the winter season. The GFC GU11/12 teams participated again in the InSoccer Futsal League and demonstrated fast paced and attractive soccer throughout the season and showed huge improvement in skill and tactical maturity compared to the 2008 season. After finishing the regular league games in first place, the girls advanced into the final with a 8-6 win over the New England Renegades. Saturday’s final then was a rematch of last year’s championship game against Newton and it was again GFC that brought home the winning trophy with a 7-6 win. The intense game started with Newton opening a 1-0 lead, but the gu11/12’s generated several scoring opportunities that paid off and lead to a 5-3 advantage at halftime. In the second half the girls continued to demonstrate good attacking soccer and improved the score to 7-3. The final minutes of the game were a bit more intense as GFC conceded three goals in the final minutes, but some solid defending sealed the 7-6 victory in the end.
As a preparation for spring soccer, Grasshopper FC also participated in a 7v7 indoor league in Tewksbury. The 7v7 games provided a good transition from indoor Futsal to 8v8 spring soccer and the coaches utilized different players and changing rosters throughout the 8 week session. After finishing the round robin games in 3rd place, the GFC team saved the best performances for the playoffs, beating their opponents 6-0, 4-1 and besting a North Andover team in the final with 4-1. Overall the players played attractive possession soccer and showed good transition from defense to attack earning the respect of coaches and spectators alike. It was a great way to finish a winter indoor season. Congratulations to all players.
