GFC Players Return from Spain. Ten players from the Grasshopper Football Club gu12 and gu13 teams returned today from Spain. The girls enjoyed a 10 day/8 night soccer tour organized by GFC Director, Tom Mitch. The group included the ten GFC players, combined with players from Massachusetts, Nevada and Idaho. The group was accompanied by GFC trainers Tom Mitch and Michael Eidmann, and a group of parent supporters. Based in the Basque Region, the group spent time in San Sebastian and the surrounding area, including a day trip to the picturesque beach town of Biarritz in Southern France.
The players had time for one training session in San Sebastian before the matches of the Donosti Cup Tournament began. A great soccer experience was highlighted by the incredible facilities which always included changing facilities, high quality artificial and natural grass playing surfaces, and competitive yet fairly played matches.
The u12 players enjoyed the 7-aside matches, putting on a good display of quality, patient, intelligent soccer, and fairing well in a very strong group that included teams from the Basque Region, Germany, and the United States. The u13 players, playing 11-aside matches, had good success in group phase of the tournament, missing out on the championship bracket on goal differential. The u13s made it to the final match of the consolation bracket where they lost in the final minutes 0-1.
Throughout the trip, the group took advantage of a variety of sights and attractions in San Sebastian, including the beautiful beaches, the old city center, and the world renowned food of San Sebastian. In addition, several members of the group took day trips to Bilbao to visit the Guggenheim, and Pamplona to experience the excitement of the running of the bulls.
