GFC gu11 team goes undefeated at Columbus Day Tournament in southern Maine. The GFC gu11s traveled to Sanford, Maine to compete in the 2007 Columbus Day tournament against teams from Maine and New Hampshire.

It was a great soccer experience throughout for this new and young team. The games on Saturday were an opportunity for all of the players to experience goal-scoring success when they beat the Maine teams from Bangor and Bath by a wide margin.

As the weather changed to cooler temperatures on Sunday, the gu11 team also faced some stiffer competition playing the squads from Casco, ME and Windham, NH, who had both been undefeated previously.

Casco proved to be a very physical team and after a 1:1 half-time score the GFC girls were attacking with more aggressiveness and scored after some nice combination plays and breakaways. Goal scorers in this 5:1 victory for the GFC team were Caroline, Kayla, Kelly, Sarah D. and Sarah R.

Windham was going into the game against GFC as the team with the best winning record and goal differential so far. The GFC girls were very motivated from the start and scored already in the 3^rd minute by a shot from Caroline. Only 7 minutes later Kelly was able to score on a rebound off of a free kick by Antonia to an early 2:0 lead. GFC and Windham continued to play some fast paced soccer with Windham, possessing the ball more in the second half and resulting in some scoring opportunities that were denied by some great saves from Aideen. Just as everyone awaited the first Windham goal, it was again Caroline that scored on a break away and sealed the victory. Windham came to a lone goal two minutes before the end.

Overall the girls further improved on both their individual 1v1 skills and playing as a team. We continued to rotate players through various positions to allow them to experience and perform their skills in different areas on the field. As a team we were able to possess the ball more and used the space effectively to penetrate into the attacking third.
